Reading
Like any other skill, reading is one that must be practiced regularly. You will be expected to read independently
on a regular basis. You must keep an independent reading log, which will be collected approximately once a
month. Independent reading will be monitored by your parent/guardian, who will sign your reading log before
you submit it. Independent reading will be assessed through independent reading projects submitted with
each reading log.
Writing
You will complete persuasive, explanatory, and narrative writing tasks this year. Additionally, you will write one
research paper. You will also be able to use an online writing tool called My Access, which will help you build
fluency and develop ideas in your writing. Grades for writing tasks will be assessed according to the New
Jersey Registered Holistic Scoring Rubric.
Tests
At the end of each novel or literary unit there will be both a test and a project/essay. Other unit tests will cover
grammar and mechanics from our textbook and other resources. You should also expect cumulative tests in
grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Tests will always be announced in advance, with ample time to prepare.
Quizzes
On average, you should expect to have at least one or two quizzes per week on grammar, our in-class text, or
the current vocabulary lesson. You are also responsible for keeping an up-to-date binder, which will count as a
quiz grade when checked. There will be occasional pop quizzes.
Homework
Homework must be completed neatly. All homework must be completed in ink or typed, with one exception:
typed vocabulary homework will NOT be accepted. Instead, download the vocabulary template posted to my
website’s Handouts and Forms page and fill it in by hand.
At the beginning of each marking period, your homework average is 105. With each missed assignment, this
