WAYS TO RESPOND TO BOOKS
Choose ONE idea for your response on the other side.
1. Describe your favorite part and explain why it was your favorite (so far).
2. Predict what will happen next.
3. Tell about the things you like or dislike about a character or event.
4. Explain any connections you made while reading such as to your life, another book, or the
world.
5. Identify some neat words or phrases the author uses and describe why you like them.
6. Identify key words, key phrases and key ideas to help you create a summary of your reading.
7. Describe the movie you created in your mind while you were reading. List some of the author’s
words that caused you to create that movie. Draw a picture of the movie.
8. Be a Critic—Tell who you would recommend this book, poem, or article to and why. *You may
only use this one when you have FINISHED the book.*
Genres
Definitions
Autobiography
The story of a real person's life that is written by that person.
Biography
A story of a real person's life written by another person.
Fantasy
A story including elements that are impossible such as talking animals and magic
powers.
Historical Fiction A fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the past. Often
the setting is real but the characters are made up from the author's imagination.
Informational
Texts that provide facts about a variety of topics (sports, animals, science,
history, careers, travel, geography, space, weather, etc.)
Mystery or
A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the
Adventure
story.
Poetry
Poetry is verse written to create a response of thought and feeling from the
reader. It often uses rhythm and rhyme.
Realistic Fiction
A story using made up characters but could happen in real life.
Science Fiction
A type of fantasy that uses science & technology (robots and machines)
Traditional
Stories that are passed down from one group to the other in history. This

includes folk takes, legends, fables, fairy tales, tall tales, and myths from
different cultures.
