Summer Readers…Celebrate Reading 2015

Dear John B. Dey Students and Parents,

Summer vacation is right around the corner and we know you all are looking forward to many exciting times! Below are

several opportunities to help encourage summer reading throughout the upcoming months.

At John B. Dey, we will be sponsoring our annual summer reading club. We have updated the club requirements so

please be sure to look at the documents carefully. Students entering Kindergarten–Second Grade are asked to read OR be

read to for a minimum of 10 books or chapters. Students entering Third Grade-Fifth Grade are asked to read a minimum of

TWO chapter books.

Record the titles and complete the writing assignment on the attached reading sheets. If extra space is needed, attach

a piece of paper and continue listing book titles. In September, students who return the reading record by September 14 will

be invited to a Summer Readers’ Celebration.

The Virginia Beach Public Libraries are also sponsoring a Summer Reading Challenge. Participants spend the summer

reading, attending free programs such as special story times, and winning prizes. Be sure to stop by the local library and sign-

up for this program or register on-line at

Each participant receives rewards upon completion of the

program. This program begins on June 8 and runs through August 8, 2015.

In addition, Barnes and Noble ( ) sponsors a summer reading program. Students who read a

set number of books and return the completed log to the local store will receive a free book! You may count the same
