about playing. Try a bit of call and response to see if the
student can hit the notes.
- Ask them to see what they can discover with the
instrument until their next lesson. (Next lesson you can
explain how the instrument works -> lengthening the
horn by pressing the valves, which raises a half step, a
whole step, etc.)
Reflection:
• At first some of the students may trouble with the embouchure. Some might puff out their
cheeks or have trouble keeping their corners firm. Others will probably have the incorrect
ratio of bottom to top lip. After reviewing the steps to embouchure they should be able to
correctly form an embouchure.
Extension:
• If the students move quicker than expected, teach them about how the instrument works
• Talk about the history of the instrument
• Have them practice long tones or explain lip slurs
• Teach them a simple song or pentachromatic scale through call and response.
