VETERANS’ PREFERENCE INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS

Veterans’ preference points cannot be awarded without required

documentation.

If you are seeking veterans’ preference in employment, please complete the attached form and return it

with your supporting documentation.

All documentation must be received prior to the date of the written test.

Under Oregon law, armed forces veterans who meet minimum qualifications for a position may be eligible for

employment preference. You may be eligible for either 5 points as a Qualified Veteran, or 10 points as a Qualified

Disabled Veteran (or spouse), but not both.

If you are a veteran and want to apply for preference points, please submit a completed Klamath County Fire District No.

1 Veterans’ Preference form as well as the required documentation listed on the form. You may submit the documentation

to Fire District No. 1 in several ways:

1. Attach your completed Veterans’ Preference form and documentation to your application when you apply for a

position with Fire District No. 1; or

2. Scan the form and documentation and email it to Stacy Brainard, stbrainard@kcfd1.com; or

3. Mail or hand-deliver the form and documentation Klamath County Fire District No. 1, 143 N Broad Street, Klamath

Falls, OR 97601.

Definitions:

“Active duty” does not include attendance at a school under military orders, except schooling incident to an active

enlistment or a regular tour of duty, or normal military training as a reserve officer or member of an organized reserve or a

National Guard unit. Any discharge date is now eligible.

“Veteran” means a person who:

(A) Served on active duty with the Armed Forces of the United States;

•

For a period of more than 178 consecutive days and was discharged or released from active duty under

honorable conditions; or

•

For 178 days or less and was discharged or released from active duty under honorable conditions because of a

service-connected disability; or

•

For at least one day in a combat zone and was discharged or released from active duty under honorable

conditions; or

(B) Received a combat or campaign ribbon for service in the Armed Forces of the United States.

“Disabled Veteran” means a person entitled to disability compensation under laws administered by the United States

Department of Veterans Affairs, a person whose discharge or release from active duty was for a disability incurred or

aggravated in the line of duty or a person who was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. Qualifying

spouse may claim points with County verification of status on DD214 or an employability or eligibility letter.

“Armed Forces” means the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard, including the reserve

components thereof. Reserve components mean:

(a) The Army Reserve;

(b) The Navy Reserve;

(d) The Air Force Reserve’

(e) The Coast Guard Reserve;

(f) The Army National Guard of the United States; and

(g) The Air National Guard of the United States.
