Winter Camping Clothing Checklist
Pack:
Hockey or Duffel bag if using a sled, otherwise use a backpack
Small day knapsack to ski with (water, snacks)
Head:
Fleece Balaclava and a 2 heavy-weight hat/toque - covers the ears and is wind-proof
Balaclava for sleeping (toques fall off in the night)
Neck warmer
Upper Body:
Long Undershirts – Synthetic (Polyester) or Merino wool
2 Wool or Polyester fleece shirts
Winter Coat with Hood - synthetic or down fill, canvas or nylon shell
Vest (optional)
Lower Body:
Several pair of preferably synthetic briefs
2 pair Long Underwear tops and bottoms - polyester or Merino wool
Camp pants
Insulated Pants, preferably farmer-john style, canvas or nylon shell
Hands:
3-5 pairs of gloves/mitts (synthetic glove liners, light synthetic gloves, wool or synthetic mittens
and shells or a pair of leather/canvas mitts (snowmobile gloves))
Feet:
5-6 pairs of socks (2 pairs liner socks (thin, polyester), 3-4 pairs heavy wool or polyester
socks)
Gaiters if you don’t have tall snow boots
Snow boots winter-weight and lined
Down/nylon camp booties or slippers
Sleeping:
Down or winter sleeping bag (if you don’t have a winter sleeping bag, bring 2 blankets or a
three-season sleeping bag and a blanket), pillow
Other:
Water bottle, insulated bottle or mug for hot chocolate, non-metal utensils, bowl, hand
sanitizer, face wipes, personal hygiene kit, lighter or matches, dish soap & cloth,
headlamp/flashlight, hot shot hand warmers, plastic sled to tow gear.
If you will be working with firewood and huddling near fires, sparks can create a lot of holes in
expensive Nylon/Gortex gear. Even carrying firewood can damage synthetic shells. So either
don't bring expensive synthetic outer clothing or cover it up with light-weight wool, light canvas
or old outer clothing that you don't care about.
