Parameters
No practicing in front of the director (come prepared or don’t play at all)
Every player will play all the scales on the matrix from memory
Scales must be one octave, slurred, played to the 9th, and not slower than eighth notes at
=100 bpm
Scales may be tested in any order, at any time (other than rehearsal time), and in any amount at a time
Melodic minor scales should be played ascending form up AND DOWN. This is the way jazz musicians
approach this particular scale. Adding this scale to your repertoire will increase your jazz vocabulary greatly
One point will be deducted for each error; Scales will be considered passing if you score 7/10 or higher
All scales must be passed at the end of the first full week of May
Those who complete the scales test matrix on time will be treated to dinner by Mr. Harrel. Those who do not
complete the scales test matrix this year will not be allowed in Titan Jazz Studio band the following year until
the matrix is completed
