Complex Color Wheel
Color is a very diverse and useful element. Color can convey
emotion, create interest, or enhance a work of art. Learning how to
effectively mix color takes a lot of patience, but can also be a lot of
fun.
For this color wheel you will be creating a kaleidoscope-like design
that has radial symmetry. Your complex color wheel will show colors
with a tint, shade, and their complimentary color.
A TINT is: _________________________________________
A SHADE is: _______________________________________
First, you will brainstorm design ideas for the 12 sections of the
wheel. Each idea needs to have 4 sections so that you can
paint the color, a tint, a shade and it’s compliment. The
attached paper has 6 wedges for you to practice design
drawings.
Second, you will draw a basic color wheel on a 12”x12” piece of
paper. (We will go through this together, step by step.)
Third, you will trace your chosen design using a window or light
box. *Remember to flip your design every time you trace it for
the kaleidoscope-like effect!
Finally, when your entire design is complete you will use
tempera paint to add the primary, secondary, and intermediate
colors, as well as their tints, shades, and compliments. (Note:
intermediate colors are also called tertiary colors.)
Label the color wheel on the back of this paper with the primary,
secondary, and intermediate (tertiary) colors. You can use this as a
guide when you are painting your design.
