DERIVATION of the QUADRATIC FORMULA!
2
Given a quadratic function in standard form, f(x) = ax
+ bx + c, set f(x) = 0 to find the x-intercepts (also
called zeros, roots, solutions). One method of solving a quadratic equation (once it is set = 0) is to
factor then set each factor = 0. Note, if it it not yet set = 0 you must do that FIRST! For example:
2
Solve: x
+ 5x – 6 = 0
Another method of solving a quadratic equation is to isolate the squared term then take the square
root of both sides. This works well in certain situations. For example:
2
2
2
Solve: x
= 9
x
= 0
x
= -4
2
2
Solve: (x-4)
= 9
2(x+1)
– 18 = 0
If none of the methods above work you learned in Algebra 1 to use the Quadratic Formula, which, if
you remember it is…(try to write it here from memory):
