Student Sports Interest Surveys

STUDENT SPORTS INTEREST SURVEYS
The Illinois State Board of Education’ s Public School Approval Section, Department of Recognition and
Supervision monitor district compliance with Title IX and the Illinois Sex Equity Rules.
Both Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and the Illinois Sex Equity Rules require that schools
accommodate to an equal degree the athletic interests and abilities of students of both sexes. It is
further required that districts conduct a written assessment of students’ sports interest, the results of
which are to be used in the design of comparable athletic programs.
To assist in meeting these requirements, the Illinois State Board of Education offers sample survey,
which may be used in the assessment of students’ sports interest. These surveys are provided as
samples only. They should be tailored to fit the needs of particular school districts.
It is important to remember that survey results are to be used for athletic program planning and
development as well as in assessing current program comparability.
Certain administrative precautions will promote the collection of meaningful student sports interest data.
For instance, it is necessary to survey students of both sexes, using one survey that lists the same
sports options for boys and for girls. The number and variety of sports options offered on the survey
must be reasonably broad, and should include but not be limited to those sports currently offered by the
district. Sports listed on the survey should not be gender-specific, i.e., list “ basketball” not “ girls’
basketball,” and the survey should include a category of “ other” to allow students the opportunity to
choose a sport not listed on the form. The survey should be offered to at least those students who are
now or who will be next year eligible to participate in sports. Only the responses of the students who
want to be participants in sports programs are to be considered in the application of survey results to
athletic program design.
Based upon tabulated results of the survey, school districts are required to offer the number and kinds of
sports, as well as the range of competitive levels within those sports, that will equally accommodate the
assessed interests of male students and female students.
