How to identify epithelial tissue
1. One side is always exposed. This is called the free surface.
2. The non-free surface is attached to underlying connective tissue called the basement
membrane.
3. The cells are tightly packed together so they have very little matrix. Matrix is the
material between each cell.
4. Very few blood vessels are found in epithelial tissue.
How to classify epithelial tissue
1. By the number of layers.
a. simple = 1 layer
b. stratified = more than 1 layer
c. pseudostratified = appears layered because
nuclei are on different levels, not truly layered
2. By the shape.
