Instructions for measuring and entering “Typical Eastern Wild Turkey” into the NCBA “All Time Record List” and the
“Annual Awards Contest”
All measurements must be made with a ¼” flexible steel tape to the nearest one-sixteenth of an inch.
Item one not used
1.
2. Beard “Length” is measured from the skin-line to the end, laying flat and not stretched. There is a small “knub” on
the base of the beard which penetrates beneath the skin-line of the breast. This portion of the beard should NOT
be included in the length of the beard. When scoring a turkey “Beard” which is fully removed and exposed, care
must be taken to begin the measurement immediately above the “knub” at the base of the beard where the skin-
line begins. The “length” to the “Tip” should NOT be measured to the longest “Single” strand of the beard unless
there are two or more strands (hairs) which are the same, longest, length. The measurer should drop back to the
second strand or strands to determine the full length of the beard.
3. In the case of “Multiple” beards, the longest one is measured for the official “Typical” score. Additional (Multiple)
Beards and Spurs are measured individually, listed on the “Non-Typical Chart”, and the total is added to the final
score for the “Non-Typical Turkey”. All entries with either multiple beards and/or spurs MUST be entered into the
“Non-Typical Turkey” category.
4. The “Length” and “Width” of the spurs are best measured using a compass or a pair of “dividers” to span these
two measurements. The measurement can then be read from a ¼ inch steel tape by laying the dividers down flat
on the tape. Greatest “Length” of spurs (B), must be taken along the centerline of the INSIDE spur edges from
junction of spur with tarsus to tip of spur. Greatest “Width” of spur (C), must be taken at the junction of spur with
tarsus at right angles to the INSIDE centerline of the spur (See spur detail).
5. If there is any “difference” in the measurements of the lengths and widths of the right and left spurs, this is entered
in column 4 (Difference) and subtracted from the TOTAL score to arrive at the FINAL SCORE.
6. Entries are ranked by total score. Ties are broken by Longer Beard Length, then Spur Length, then Spur Width.
