Addition & Subtraction Rules
1. If the signs are the same, add the numbers and keep the sign.
−7 − 8 = −15
7 + 8 = 15
or
2.
If the signs are different subtract, and take the sign of the larger number.
‐7 + 8 = 1 or 7 – 8 = − 1
Use addition and Subtraction Rules when you “combine like terms”
Multiplication & Division Rules

Parenthesis can be used to indicate “Multiplication”
(
