Summer Reading & Writing Assignment
AP World History, 2015-2016 (Dr. Shuler)
Welcome to AP World History, the millennia-spanning saga of
leaders, thinkers, villains, and ordinary people that shaped the world
in which you live. For most of you this will be your first Advanced
Placement class, and it is wonderful that you are tackling the
challenge. A word of warning—you will have to do a lot of reading
and a lot of writing inside and outside of the classroom. Since the
AP Exam for college credit at the end of the year is cumulative, you
will have to keep excellent notes and work hard throughout the
year. If you are willing to do that, I can promise you that you will be
in a position to excel at the end.
In order to cover all the material required for the AP Exam, you will need to get started during
the summer with an assignment to prepare you to grasp both the big picture of world history and
how historians “do” history. Your mission is to read Felipe Fernández-Armesto’s Near a
Thousand Tables: A History of Food (2002, paperback 2003). You can order it
online
or find it at
your local library. While reading it, fill out the attached notes chart, and then write a short essay
about it choosing one of the options listed on the following pages. Both the notes chart and the
essay are due Tuesday, August 11—the beginning of the semester. The essay will need to be
submitted to Turnitin, but we will go over how to do that during the first week of class.
We will also be reviewing Jared Diamond’s Gun, Germs, and Steel, which you covered in World
Geography. A summary of the documentary based on his book can be found at
Let me know if you have any questions about this assignment or want some feedback on your
essay. I can be reached at .
Best wishes and good luck!
