RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP
Confining your dog
Ensuring our dogs are confined to the property can easily reduce a large proportion of dog management problems. The majority of dog attacks are the result of
inadequate confinement and occur within close proximity to the dog’s home. Many people are unaware of their responsibilities where dogs are concerned. If you
agree to look after a dog for someone the law defines you as the owner whilst it is in your care.
If the dog escapes from your yard and attacks another animal or a person, you would be deemed to be the owner and may be prosecuted for the dog’s actions. If
you live on acreage and cannot afford to fence the whole property, fence off a section or build a kennel and run.
Confining your cat
Around 80 per cent of accidents involving cats occur at night. Cats allowed to roam can be killed or injured through car accidents and fights with other animals. They
may contract fatal diseases such as Feline AIDS, or be more likely to require veterinary attention for fleas, ticks, worms, abscesses, cuts, diarrhoea and other illnesses.
For these reasons, cats kept inside at night generally live at least three times longer than cats that are not confined. The safety benefits are even greater for cats kept
inside or in an enclosure both day and night.
Dog training
Many problems with dogs can be overcome with the correct training and advice. Puppy preschool is a great way to introduce your puppy to the world. It reduces
some forms of aggression in dogs and encourages acceptance of adults, children and other dogs. Environmental enrichment for your pets in the form of chew toys
or scratching objects may stimulate your pet's mind and help minimise boredom. Owners experiencing behavioural problems with their dogs should contact a trainer
for advice, whether it is barking, digging or a bit too boisterous. Different types of training are available locally in the form of group training in a park or one-on-one
training at home.
Desexing your Pet
It is recommended that you desex your animal. This will reduce your annual registration fees, and can assist in with some behavioural issues in animals including
roaming outside your property. It is mandatory to desex your cat (unless exemption has been granted under the Domestic Animals Act 1994).
Update your Microchip details
Please ensure your address and telephone numbers are up-to-date with the microchipping registry, in the event you are separated from your pet.
