Cells and Their Organelles
The cell is the basic unit of life. The following is a glossary of animal and plant
cell terms. All cells are surrounded by a cell membrane. The cell membrane, or
plasma membrane, is semipermeable, allowing some substance to pass into the cell
and blocking others. It is composed of two types of molecules – lipids, which are
fatty or oily molecules, and proteins. Color and label the cell membrane tan. Plant
cells have an additional layer surrounding them called the cell wall. The cell wall is
made of nonliving material called cellulose. The cell wall provides and maintains the
shape of plant cells and serves as a protective barrier. Color and label the cell wall
dark green (plant only). The centrosome (also called the “microtubule organizing
center”) is an area in the cell where microtubules are produced. The animal cell
centrosome is actually a pair of small organelles called centrioles. During cell
division (mitosis), the two centrioles move to opposite sides of the dividing cell.
Color and label the centrioles purple (animal cell only).
