When sugar is dissolved in water it produces a homogeneous mixture; the dissolved sugar is

Elements and compounds are both pure substances. An element though cannot be broken down into
simpler components since it is the simplest form of matter. Compounds can be broken down into its
elements.

9. Why does a magnet pick up iron (Fe) in a mixture of iron (Fe) and sulfur (S), but not in the compound
iron sulfide (FeS)?
In a mixture of iron and sulfur the two elements are not chemically combined. Iron retains all its
properties and so does sulfur. They can be separated using a magnet. When iron and sulfur are
chemically combined to form the compound iron sulfide, iro sulfide has a different set of properties
compared to just iiorn or just sulfur.
