Objectives:
1. Look at current Design Magazines to see Magazine Cover Layouts that utilize portraiture.
2. Introduce you to contemporary design magazines that are pushing style of magazine design
in the art & design world.
3. Shoot with an understanding of negative space and how that will effect the image
appearance on a magazine cover.
Subject / Concept:
You will create a portrait for a magazine cover. You will select a magazine cover from one of
choices listed in this assignment handout. You will analyze the following about the magazine
cover and use it to create your own image:
•
Composition
•
Pose
•
Lighting
•
Tone
•
Color
•
Style, Look, Clothing, Make-Up, Appearance, Mood
All the above information will need to be listed on your journal. These will become your starting
points for your original work. You do not need to make an exact copy of your reference cover,
but you should be able to create a photography with a similar layout and appearance.
Shoot with enough negative space to accommodate text as shown on your reference image.
Light:
Open. Use whatever lighting is best for your goals. If you pick a Cover that uses controlled
lighting, than do that. If you pick one that uses available light, do that.
Requirements:
o
Do required planning in your journal or sketchbook for the assignment.
Plan your shoot in advance. You will get better results.
o
You must use a person in your image.
o
Shoot in Camera RAW.
o
Shoot a minimum of 10 exposures. This can include brackets and WB shots.
o
White Balance is optional, but recommended.
o
On your contact sheet, I should see evidence of the following:

White Balance Device in each new lighting situation
§
Shoot with negative space for magazine cover template
Use file naming system listed below.

Edit to best result. Your final image must fit the design template proportions.
o
Export Original RAW images for files you used for this assignment.
You must use the Magazine Cover Template .psd file to create your edit file.
