3. Fog
a. What type of fog is most likely to form in a valley or a similar low-lying area? How does
this type of fog form?
b. Suppose an unusual early-season cold front moved a very cold air mass over Seattle in early
October, and the following morning you noticed some fog over Lake Washington but none
away from the water. What type of fog would this most likely be and how would it have
formed in this case?
c. What are the atmospheric and surface conditions that make summertime fog much more
likely at the US west coast than at the coast of the Gulf of Mexico?
d. Morning fog that goes away as the day progresses is often said to “burn off”. There is no fire
involved, so describe the process by which what is called “burn off” occurs.
