Sedimentary Rocks Worksheet

STEP 1: ROCK OBSERVATIONS
Open your shoebox and have each member select 1 rock.
a. In your Journal write Sample #1 and then LIST at least 5 observations (for
example texture, color, grain size, shape).
b. Write down if your rock is Sedimentary, Igneous, or Metamorphic.
c. Go around the circle and have each person share:
(1) description of their rock
(2) what type of rock you may have and WHY!!
d. As a group, put your rocks 3 piles (Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic) in
the CENTER of your circle based on your characterizations & descriptions.
* Ask your teacher to come by and check your rocks.
STEP 2: Take a Rock Cycle Shower
Open your rock cycle and place it on the ground. Open your envelope and pass out
materials to each team member. Place the cards on the rock cycle where you think
they should go.
e. Green Cards describe major parts of the rock cycle (Student #1)
f. Blue Cards describe the Green Cards (Students #2 & 3)
g. White Cards are Processes (Students #4 & 5)
h. Yellow Cards describe the processes (Students #6 & 7)
STEP 3: Add Rocks and Sediment to your Rock Cycle
i. Get your rocks & sediment and place them on your Rock Cycle
(EVERYONE should participate!!)
Step 4: Get the Post-It notes out from your envelope
j. Decide what descriptive words best describe each Rock Type or Sediment.
Write these words on your Post-It notes and stick them around the tapped
box.
Step 5: Find another group that is done and SWITCH
k. Write down your observations of their rock cycle in your science notebook.
How is their rock cycle different? Do you agree/disagree with where they
placed their cards, processes, and rocks?
Step 6: Listen to your teacher for clean-up directions.
