5. COMING OF AGE/CHARACTERIZATION : Many of this year’s summer reading books deal with the
main character’s coming of age: when a child experiences an event or chain of events which cause this child to
experience a loss of innocence, to mature, to become an adult, or to gain insight into humanity. Discuss your
main character’s emotional journey in this novel. Does he or she “change” or cross the threshold into
adulthood? What events cause this change? List and explain.
6. LITERARY ANALYSIS: Find three passages from this novel that best capture the main idea or theme of
the novel. These passages may be dialogue or descriptive prose. Copy each passage [use quotation marks and
page numbers], identify the speaker, identify the main idea/ theme, and explain why you chose each passage.
7. CHARACTERIZATION : Which character from your book is least like you and why? Provide three reasons
in your explanation.
8. CONNECTION: Imagine that your novel is being made into a movie. You have been hired to choose the
soundtrack for the movie. Choose one song as the title track to the movie: the song that appears at the climax of
the movie. Which song would you choose and why? What moment in your book functions as the climax to the
novel? Explain your choice and ATTACH A COPY OF THE SCHOOL APPROPRIATE SONG LYRICS TO
THIS READING LOG.
