I have used Read Write and Type and Wordy Qwerty in my classrooms for over ten years. It is one of the
most powerful tools for developing literacy in young students.
All of my grandchildren have used it with great success. One was in junior high when she used it to teach
herself touch-typing. She recently got her B.S. in math from Lubbock Christian University and is now
working on her Masters. Two others used it to help them learn to read well in the very first stages of learning
to read. I have three more grandchildren, who will be starting it shortly.
I also have classroom teachers run it in their classrooms so that my tutoring student can get extra help
between tutoring sessions with this powerful software. It is my personal opinion that every kindergarten and
first-grade classroom in America would profit greatly by having every student work through the program at
least once during the school year.
Although the software is very effective in keeping track of students’ progress, I have developed these charts
to help me keep personal track of the students’ progress through the program. I am offering them free on my
website, , to encourage parents (grandparents!) and teachers to take advantage of this
excellent tool for developing literacy.
It is interesting to note that, while the program is designed for kindergarten and first grade, I have found it
very helpful for students through sixth-grade who come to me with reading problems. It develops phonemic
awareness in students who have experienced developmental delay in this vital foundational reading skill. It
also teaches the basic sound-to-symbol relationships and alphabetic principle through multi-sensory
activities.
