Analysis
1. Analyze:
Calculate the average vital capacities for the following sub-groups:
Group A: male, athlete
Group C: female, athlete
Group B: male, non-athlete
Group D: female, non-athlete
2. Communicate:
Organize your data into an easy-to-read table. You will include this table in the
Results section of your report.
3.
Interpret
: Using the average vital capacities, determine if athleticism is correlated with vital
capacity. Groups to compare:
(i) Group A vs. Group B
(ii) Group C vs. Group D
Information to include in your introduction
In your introduction, you must provide any background information that would be required to
understand your experiment. For this particular experiment it should include information on the
following:
a) What is vital capacity?
b) Do some research – What is the currently-accepted relationship between athleticism and vital
capacity, and why does it exist?
You must also include the
Questions to consider in your discussion
When you write up your discussion, use paragraph format. Don’t follow a numbered format such as
the one below. You do not necessarily have to follow this order, either. These are just topics that
should be addressed in your discussion.
a) Based on your study, are athleticism and vital capacity correlated? Cite data/figures.
b) Are the results of your study supported by current scientific literature? Explain.
c) For which variable did you control when you compared athletes vs. non-athletes? Why is this
important? Be specific.
d) List two other variable(s) that were not controlled. (These don’t necessarily have to be variables
that were listed in your table.) After performing research, describe the possible effects on vital
capacity of each of these two variables.
e) Discuss the reliability of this study. Is the method you employed a reasonable one that can be
used to establish a causal relationship? Explain.
f) Suggest two improvements to your method that could increase the reliability of this study. Explain
your reasoning.
Write up your report, following the format provided for a formal lab report. Make sure to cite all
information in the body of the text (introduction and discussion) as well as in a works cited list.
For this lab,
 Do include a hypothesis
 Do not include the raw data
