Types of Independent Study experiences. The following courses fall under the general “independent study” in terms of
university rules. Students may enroll in no more than a total of 6 semester credit hours (SCH) of independent study courses
during one semester. There is a university limit on the number of total hours that can be accumulated across Independent
Study courses: 12 SCH, or 20% of total UTD SCH, which every is smaller. In addition, in order to earn University Honors,
students must complete 45 graded hours at UTD; because Independent Study courses are taken Credit/No Credit, their hours do
not count toward the 45 graded hours total.
4395 Co-op Fieldwork (3 semester hours) Prefix can be CGS, CLDP, NSC, PSY or SPAU. Students earn course credit for
field experience in an approved business or government setting. Requires working at least 135 hours in the field. Students
will keep a journal of their workplace experience, maintain contact with the instructor, and prepare a written report that
focuses on the accomplishments and insights gained through their co-op experience. Credit will not be awarded
retroactively. Apply for placements through the Career Center office. May repeat for up to six hours. Credit/No Credit.
NSC 4v95 Externship (1-3 semester hours) Students earn course credit for directed research performed at approved
laboratories at UT Southwestern or other local neuroscience centers. Student must obtain permission from a supervising
NSC faculty member at UT Dallas. Taken on a credit/no credit basis. May be repeated for credit (9 hours maximum).
4V96 Teaching Internship (1-3 semester hours) Prefix can be CGS, CLDP, NSC, PSY or SPAU. Students work
individually with faculty members in preparing and presenting course materials and tutoring students. Requires working at

least 45 hours per semester credit hour
Must have completed the relevant course with a grade of at least B. Permission of
instructor and department required. Taken on a Credit/No Credit basis. Can be repeated for total of 6 semester hours.

4397 Thesis Research (3 hours) Prefix can be CGS, CLDP, NSC, PSY or SPAU. An independent study course in which
the student writes an honors thesis under faculty supervision. Taken for a letter grade. Student must also submit an honors
thesis application form to the Associate Dean’s office (GR 4.528). See handout titled Honors Thesis Research for more
details and deadlines.
4v98 Directed Research (1-3 credit hours) Prefix can be CGS, CLDP, NSC or PSY. Student assists faculty with research
projects or conducts a research project under weekly faculty supervision. Requires working at least 45 hours per semester
credit hour. Taken on a Credit/No Credit basis only. (May be repeated up to 9 hours total.)
4v99 Individual Study (1-3 credit hours) Prefix can be CGS, CLDP, NSC, PSY or SPAU. Faculty guides student in
individualized course of study that involves weekly reading, writing and discussion. Requires working at least 45 hours
per semester credit hour. Taken on a Credit/No Credit basis. (May be repeated up to 6 hours total.)
