DUTCHESS COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
OVERSIZE/OVERWEIGHT VEHICLE INFORMATION
The registered owner of any vehicle traveling on roads owned or maintained by Dutchess County Department of Public Works
(DCDPW) which exceed the size or weight limits listed below must apply for a special hauling permit from DCDPW prior to
vehicle traveling over said roads. If a special hauling permit is required, a Special Hauling Permit Route Survey form must be
completed. The Special Hauling Permit must be accompanied by the required insurance certificate.
Permit applicants are advised that DCDPW require at least FOUR (4) business days to process and issue a Special Hauling
Permit once a completed Special Hauling Permit form and Route Survey with certificate of insurance are submitted to
DCDPW.
References after each item below are to subdivisions of Section 385 of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law
WIDTH:
96 inches (school buses 98 inches).
HEIGHT:
13 feet 6 inches maximum (Subd. 2)
LENGTH:
Single Vehicles (except articulated buses and semi trailers) - 40 feet. (Subd. 3).
Buses carrying more than 7 passengers – 45 feet (Subd. 3c)
Buses, articulated – 62 feet (Subd. 3)
Semi Trailer – 48 feet (Subd. 3)
Combination of Vehicles – 65 feet (Subd. 4)
WEIGHT:
Permissible weight of vehicles and combinations with pneumatic tires. Axels less than 46 inches apart are
considered one axel. If there is more than one tire on a wheel, add their widths together (subd. 5)
Weight per inch of tire width – 800 pounds (Subd. 6)
Weight on any one wheel – 11,200 pounds (Subd. 7)
Weight on any two consecutive axels less than 8 feet (96 inches) apart – 36,000 pounds (Subd. 9)
Weight on any axle – 22,400 pounds (Subd. 8)
Weight on any consecutive axels 8 feet to 10 feet apart – Maximum 40,000 pounds.
Maximum gross vehicle weight – 80,000 pounds. (Subd. 10)
Solid tires – may not carry more than 80% of the weight allowed by pneumatic tires (Subd. 11)
Metal tires – may not carry more than 40% of the weight allowed by pneumatic tires (Subd. 12)
