6) Merit Badges and Certifications
SPL and ASPL: The BSA merit badge program allows boys and young men to explore
many fields, helps them round out their Scouting skills, and perhaps introduces them to
subjects that will become lifelong interests and rewarding careers. In addition, advancement
establishes a pattern of setting positive goals, and then working to achieve those goals-a
critical life skill.

The SPL and ASPL work together to announce and present the MB's to each boy. Each boy is given a
chance to describe what they may have learned in the process, or to state which badge they found the
