If the numerator is smaller than the denominator (a < b), the fraction is called
a PROPER FRACTION.
If however the numerator is greater than the denominator (a > b), the fraction
is called an IMPROPER FRACTION.
Cancelling/Simplifying Fractions
Fractions may have numerators and denominators that are composite
numbers (numbers that has more factors than 1 and itself). In such cases you
may be able to simplify a fraction (or cancel it down) to its simplest form.
To simplify a fraction:
Find a common factor of the numerator and denominator.
Divide both the numerator and denominator by this common factor.
Repeat this process until there are no more common factors.
Alternatively you could identify the greatest common factor and divide the
numerator and denominator by this value.
