DIRECTIONS: Students are independent for financial aid purposes if they are/were in a permanent legal

guardianship or they are/were determined to be an emancipated minor immediately before reaching the age of

18. To verify your current status, please read the definitions below, check the appropriate box for your

circumstances, and return the signed and dated form with the documentation requested. If you have any

questions about your status, please contact the Financial Aid office.

Permanent Legal Guardianship:

A legal guardianship is decided by a court in the state of the student’s legal residence. The court appoints a

guardian, other than the student or the student’s parent(s), to act on behalf of the student as their caretaker.

This guardianship must continue in a permanent status until the student reaches 18. If the guardianship is

temporary and/or is discontinued prior to the student’s 18

birthday, the student is not in a legal guardianship

for purposes of financial aid.

Emancipated Minor:

An emancipated minor is legally freed from the control and support of the parent(s) through a court order. The

emancipated minor status must be determined by a court prior to the student’s 18

birthday or the age of

majority in the state of their legal residence. An emancipated minor becomes an adult able to sign contracts

before reaching the age of majority. A court order terminating child support upon the child’s reaching the age of

majority does not qualify, even if it uses the word emancipation.
