1Sleeping Children Policy
To ensure that children’s comfort, safety and well being are met, the following policy
applies to the monitoring of sleeping and/or resting children at Tuakau Learning Centre.
Where children attend Tuakau Learning Centre for 4 hours on any day, provision will be
made for undisturbed rest. There is safe space provided for all ages. They are as
follows:
The sleeping facilities are in compliance with the Education (Early Childhood
Services) Regulations 2008.
Children under the age of 2 will be checked every five minutes and the sleep
chart signed. It is preferable to management that someone is present in the
room when 3 or more children under the age of two are sleeping.
If there are 5 or more children (over the age of two) in the sleep room there
will be a staff member present at all times. During which time, other staff will
regularly monitor and assist with children waking up, nappy change, and getting
dressed.
If there are less than 5 children (over two) asleep in the sleep room, a staff
member will check on the children every 7 minutes by use of a small alarm and
by initialling the Sleep chart.
If there are under two’s included in the over two’s sleep room then a 5 minute
check needs to be done when a staff member is not continuously in the room.
When the under two’s are awake then you can revert back to the 7 minute check
for over two’s.
Each child shall be provided with their own sleeping bag/bedding, and these will
be laundered regularly (see laundry system policy)
Children’s bodies will never be walked over.
Children will sleep with their bodies lying in the same direction or head to head
or feet to feet; never head to feet.
Children’s sleep patterns will be recorded on the sleep chart, and this
information will be available to parents/guardians/whanau.
There are to be no bottles or food in the sleep room.
The child centre sleeping children policy will be displayed in the door way of the
sleep room.
