Animal Farm Character Analysis Paper
LEVEL ___ ASSESSMENT
You have been assigned a character from the novel Animal Farm that you will be using
for your “Character in a Bag” project.
Now, you will be responsible for analyzing the symbolic importance of that character in
relation to symbolism and theme. A character analysis is a close reading of text in order to
examine a specific character and his/her contributions to the meaning of the book. This
character more-often-than-not is a representation of something larger. In the case of Animal
Farm Russian history and communism is under scrutiny. It will be your responsibility to examine
your assigned character.
Assignment:
Analyze the theme of Animal Farm and how your chosen character helps teach that
theme.
Consider the following questions: Who does your character represent in Russian history?
How is your character represented and characterized in the story? What THEME is being
taught in Animal Farm and how does your character help teach that lesson?
Requirements:
Format: two page, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font
Heading: In the upper left-hand corner of the first page, list your name, your instructor's name, the
course, and the date. Again, be sure to use double-spaced text.
Just “return” down to the next line for your title.
Title: Center the title. Do not underline, italicize, or place your title in quotation marks; write the title in
Title Case (standard capitalization), not in all capital letters.

Header: Create a header in the upper right-hand corner that includes your last name, followed by a
space with a page number (i.e. Wagner, 1). Click INSERT, PAGE NUMBER TOP RIGHT, and type your last
name in front of the page number)
No use of I, ME, YOU, I THINK, etc. State everything as fact!
Historical Background Use at least one fact for each supporting detail for your thesis
(look back to your notes).
Outline Completed on time, for review.

Final: When this is due, you will turn in your final draft, your peer-edited draft, and outline.
Steps:
While reading Animal Farm use post-it notes to mark places that you would like to use in
your paper, including quotes.
Develop a thesis considering the questions posed above.
o One sentence explaining what you will accomplish in the essay.
Keep track of your notes concerning history, symbolism, lead-ins, etc..
Use the rubric to help guide your writing process.
Complete your outline in complete thoughts/phrases.
Type up draft in the lab.
Post and peer review online.
Post final draft and turn in a hard copy of the final, peer edit, and your peer edit to Mrs.
Wagner.
