Parasites interact with food webs just as any other predator interacts.

If the parasite feeds on a consumer, then it would be considered a

secondary consumer. If the parasite feeds on a secondary consumer,

then it would be considered to be a tertiary consumer.

Parasites would show up on a food web if/when they kill their hosts. An

example would be the parasitic wasp larvae that eat their host from the

inside out.

Obtaining energy from alternate sources such as the acidity of the soil

or consuming insects for additional nutrients.

Drought clearly affects the water supply in an ecosystem. Organisms

that have adapted to conserve water, find water, or collect water in a

unique fashion from the environment will be most likely to survive.

population of a specific species within an ecosystem?

Increase in food source, larger area to populate, less predators…

16. What human activities could lead to water pollution, which might in

turn lead to harmful algal blooms?

Over-fertilizing followed by excessive rains/watering. Runoff water

containing fertilizers enters bodies of water and the fertilizers promote

algal blooms.

ecosystems.

Biotic- Living

Abiotic- Non-living; rocks, water, air, light, temperature

18. Why do humans create artificial reefs?

They create them as an oasis for various types of ocean life. Economic

gain is another reason people create these “attractions”.

Artificial reefs, dumping, polluting, over-fishing, destruction of
