Addition and subtraction

Most student nurses take it for granted that they can carry out addition and subtraction. Your
1
patients and colleagues will rely on your ability to carry out these tasks accurately. In Chapter 4
2
(Fluid balance and maintenance) you will use your addition and subtraction skills to calculate
3
your patient’s fluid balance. The fluid balance is the amount of fluid the patient is retaining to
4
ensure their hydration levels are sufficient to maintain life.

Scenario
30
You are currently calculating the fluid balance for Major Thomas Llandar. Major Llandar has been recorded
1
as having consumed the following liquids: tea 800ml, coffee 550ml, water 600ml and juice 175ml over a 24-
2
hour period. You have to calculate Major Llandar’s total fluid intake for the day as part of your daily duties, a
3
NMC professional standard requirement (29(ii)).
4
5
6
In order to find the total amount of fluid, you need to add all the amounts of different fluids
7
consumed. The best-practice method is to list the numbers one above the other. Keeping the
8
digits in alignment allows you to total each column of numbers in turn. Should a column total
9
become double digits, place the first digit at the base of the next column to the left. The second
40
digit goes into the total as part of the answer sought.
