You can now confidently report on his Fluid Balance Chart that Major Llandar has consumed
2125ml of fluid on this day.
Subtraction
Scenario
You are currently calculating the fluid balance for Major Thomas Llandar. Major Llandar has been recorded
as having consumed 2125ml of liquids on the day being charted. His total fluid output was recorded as
1960ml. To complete the chart you must now subtract the output from the input to obtain the fluid balance.
As for addition, align the digits of the numbers above each other. When a value being subtracted
is too large to be subtracted from the digit above it, you will need to ‘borrow’ from the digit to
the left in the top number. This will lower the value you borrow from by 1, as can be seen in the
diagram, and increase the digit you are subtracting from by 10. These changes are shown using
small digits.

The result gives Major Llandar a fluid balance of 165ml for the day on which the figures were
recorded.
Hint . . .
You should always subtract the lesser value number from the greater value
number. Should the amount expended (output) be more than the amount consumed
(intake), this would indicate a Negative Fluid Balance.
A negative balance should be preceded by the word ‘Minus’ or clearly marked with the – symbol.
