Community Service Directions
Paperwork
Each student is required to complete 15 hours of community service in order to pass Living Skills. To show us that you
have completed those hours please have the person in charge where you are doing your volunteer work fill out the blue
Record Sheet. You then complete a written reflection, where you have the opportunity to talk about your experience, which
you attach to the blue sheet. (see directions at the bottom of this page)
If you do 100 hours of community service by the time you graduate from Gunn you can have that placed on your transcript.
So keep copies of all of the paperwork you submit to your Living Skills teacher.
Requirements
The organization you work for must be non-profit. For example: a library, school, church, environmental, service or
political organization.
You must not be paid for the hours you work.
There must be someone supervising your work that can verify your hours.
Although it is a lovely gesture for you to clean your grandmother’s garage - that does not count.
How to choose an organization
You will be spending many hours doing this work – so choose work that has meaning and is fulfilling for you. Also, think
about what you want to do in the future. Completing a ton of community service hours simply so that it looks good on your
college applications is not enough. You should choose work that has some connection to you personally, or to what you
want to do with your life. In other words if you want to be a doctor volunteer at a hospital not the library. If you want to do
something for the environment choose something in that field.
Where to start
Look around your community and see who is asking for volunteers. Please realize that some organizations do not accept
students who are under 16, yet some have family volunteer options where you can volunteer with a parent. Two websites
that have been helpful to students looking for opportunities are -
The Guidance Department office also has a list of Community Service organizations.
Reflection Directions: A written reflection must be attached to this sheet
that includes what you did and a reflection on the experience that you
had. Why did you choose this particular location to do your community
service? What did you learn about yourself from this experience? How
did this experience affect you? How might this affect your life in the
future? If you volunteer at more that one place – write only one
reflection that incorporates how you felt about all of your experiences.
