TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE

When you expect an argument try to move to space that is lower risk. Avoid

arguments in places with only 1 exit or places that contain potential weapons

(bathroom, garage, kitchen, etc.)

Share a code word with friends, family and children to call for help.

Teach your children to call 911 and give your address if you are unable to do so.

Teach your children your address so they can tell officers how to find you.

Keep your phone in the same place all of the time so your children can use it to

call 911 if they need to.

Identify ways to leave the house safely (such as back doors, windows, stairwells,

fire escapes, etc.)

Identify a safe place to go if you must leave the house in a hurry.

Keep an “escape bag” with money, keys, and important documents in a safe place.

Keep important phone numbers in one place (like a cell phone) for children’s

school, doctor’s office, WIC office, DHS office, your work #)

Consider keeping emergency friends, shelters, & hotlines under codenames in

your cell phone.

Keep records of every incident with your abuser, you may need it for a personal

protection order.

Call the police anytime you feel you are unsafe.

Leave extra clothes with a friend or family member.

If you leave do not post to social media and consider creating new profiles &

eliminating old ones.

Change computer passwords (bank accounts, social media, e-mail, etc.)

“Defriend” abuser from social media sites.

IMPORTANT ITEMS TO TAKE IF YOU LEAVE

Id for yourself/ driver’s license

*Medications, glasses, etc.

*Children’s birth certificates

Your birth certificate

Social Security cards

* Money

Phone, charger, and phone #s

* Keys: house & car

Checkbook, ATM card, credit cards, Bridge card

Passwords to online accounts

Children’s favorite toys and/or blankets to help calm them in a stressful time

Lease agreement (in case you need to prove you belong in the home and not your

partner)

Consider taking small saleable objects (if you need to get more money later)

Pictures, items of sentimental value
