SIMPLE KINETIC THEORY
1. Explain the following:
a) Most solids expand slightly when they melt.
b) Draw simple diagrams to show the arrangement of particles in a liquid and a gas.
c) Liquids freeze when they are cooled; some liquids freeze at much higher temperatures than
others.
2. Define
a) enthalpy of fusion;
b) enthalpy of vaporisation.
3. a) Explain the difference between evaporation and boiling.
b) Explain what is meant by saturated vapour pressure.
c) The saturated vapour pressure of water at 25°C is 3.17 kPa; at 50°C it is 12.35 kPa. Why does
saturated vapour pressure increase with temperature? (This question isn't directly covered by the
page you have just read, but you should be able to work it out.)
d) Explain what is meant by sublimation.
