Vocabulary Bingo
Engage your high school students in a little game play fun at the conclusion of your vocabulary unit. To
prepare for your game, type or write the definitions of your unit vocabulary words on slips of paper then
fold them and place them in a hat or basket.
1. To play vocabulary bingo, give each student a list of vocabulary words, and a blank five by five grid.
2. Ask each student to select 25 words and write them in the blanks on his grid.
3. Draw out the definitions at random, reading them to the students as you pull them out of the basket.
4. Ask students to mark off any words that they have on their list when they hear you read the matching
definition.
5. The first student to successfully mark off five words in a row yells "Bingo!" and wins the game.
Vocabulary Toss
1. Purchase and set up in the classroom a mini basketball hoops that comes with a small sponge.
"Basketball." Use masking tape to create on the floor a foul line that shots will be taken from.
2. Prepare in advance a vocabulary activity employing words that are included on the students' word
wall. Prepare at least one question for each student in the class. The following sample question
formats will work nicely for that purpose:
Provide a definition and ask students to identify the word- that matches the definition
a.
Provide a sentence that has one word missing
b.
Provide a synonym (a word that means the same thing) or an antonym (a word that means the
c.
opposite), and have students identify the word
The Game
3. Arrange the class into 2 to 4 teams. Ask one of the questions you prepared of the first student on the
first team.
4. If a student identifies the correct word, that student earns a point and a chance to double his or her
score (earn two points for the team) by trying to shoot a basket. A successful shot earns that second
point; there is no penalty for a missed shot.
5. If the student does not identify the correct word-wall word, pass the question to the first player on
the next team.
6. At the end of the game, the team with the most points is declared the winning team.
Draw, Use, Define
Students work cooperatively to acquaint themselves with vocabulary.
1. To begin, divide students into teams of three, giving each team writing paper or construction paper
2. Assign each team three "word wall" words.
3. Tell the teams that they must draw a picture/illustration of the assigned word, use it in a sentence,
and then define it.
4. Place the pictures, sentences and definitions on the wall.
