TPCASTT
is an acronym that allows you to better understand the meaning and reading of poems.
Directions: Read the poem title, and complete the first box. Then read the poem several times and fill in the rest of the chart
to get a better understanding of the poem’s meaning. Be sure to answer in complete sentences and provide specific details/
phrases to prove your answers. Use your own paper as necessary!
Poem Title:
1. Look at the title before reading the poem and make a prediction about the poem. What do the

words in the title suggest (denotation/connotation)?
2. Translate the poem line by line into your own words. Do not summarize!!
P = Paraphrase
What is the subject/topic of the poem? Complete this step of the TPCASTT on the back of this
chart.
3. Look for meaning in the poem beyond the paraphrase by finding poetic devices such as alliteration,

onomatopoeia, rhythm, rhyme, repetition, simile, metaphor, personification, symbolism, diction, point of
view, etc. (Look for at least five different devices.)

many literary terms

4. What is the speaker's tone? How does the speaker feel about the subject/topic? What is the poet's tone?

5. Point out the shifts in subject, speaker, attitude, mood, tone, motif, action, or rhythm. Identify
the specific lines the shift occurs. Why do you think the shift occurs? What is the effect of this
shift? (Work on identifying at least two shifts.)
When looking for
shifts, consider the
following:
punctuation, words
such as but, yet,
however, and,
although, or changes
in diction or the length
of lines.
6. Explain the meaning of the title. Has the meaning of the title changed after studying the poem?

7. What human experience, motivation, or condition is suggested by the poem? What idea is

being communicated about the subject/topic? Did the narrator learn a lesson about life? State
the theme in a complete sentence.
