CALCULATION OF Y

for Creditable Service, Experience

and Qualifications

This form is intended to assist those who must determine the Y-Value for a Member of the DFA

Bargaining Unit (other than an Instructor for whom a different form is used). Y is important because no

Member shall be given an annual salary rate that is less than the minimum for his or her Y in the salary

schedule (appropriate to rank) in the Collective Agreement.

Before completing this form, please read through it at least once. The full guide for computing

Y is given in Appendix III of the Collective Agreement. That guide and past practice are the bases

for resolving questions on matters of Y-Values.

The Y formula is:

Y = S + E + Ph.D.

in which 3 is given for the Ph.D. degree or its equivalent, S is the years of Creditable Service in the

rank of Lecturer or above in universities or equivalent institutions, and E is the weighted years of Other

Relevant Experience. The weighted maximum permitted for E is 5.

Periods of Study

In order that Deans and others can follow the progress over time of your career

and qualifications, please complete the section below. Ensure that you include the start and end dates

(month and year) for each period of study towards each degree, diploma and certificate. This is

essential because overlaps in periods of time for S, E and study must sometimes be distinguished.

Please note separately periods, if any, when you were finished the work (e.g., course credits and data

collection) for a degree, but had not yet completed writing the final thesis or dissertation (i.e., periods

in which your state of completion was “All But Dissertation” or ABD). [Having the degree means

having obtained approval by the appropriate (examining) committee for the award of the degree.

Equivalents of the Ph.D. include, but are not limited to, Ed.D., D.Phil., D.Pharm., and D.B.A. Not

included as equivalent, for example, are LL.M., M.D., and Agregation des Lettres. Having two or more

doctoral degrees or equivalents does not increase the credit of 3 given in the Ph.D. category.]
