Equivalents of Lecturers

Taking full responsibility for teaching courses leading to a degree or

diploma, setting examinations, grading them and reporting grades to be used for credit towards a

degree or diploma and being a voting member of a Faculty are the characteristics of being a Lecturer

or above (regardless of one’s title). If the teaching responsibilities fall short of the criteria, it is counted

under E (“Other Relevant Experience”) rather than here under S. If it appears that teaching was part

of one’s duties as a graduate student, that is entirely disallowed. On the research side, someone who

set up a new laboratory in a university, staffed it, planned and carried out research in it, and applied for

grants to fund it, is considered to be the equivalent of a Lecturer or above.

Equivalents of Universities

The institution must be degree-granting. That does not include

community colleges, C.E.G.E.P.S. and hospital schools preparing students for diploma examinations.

Being a senior research scientist, with post-doctoral fellows to supervise, in institutions that are

“commercial” rather than “educational”, even though such institutions encourage “basic” research isn’t

considered the equivalent of working in a university.

Periods of Service

Please note in the section below the periods during which you served in

the rank of Lecturer or equivalent or above in universities or equivalent institutions. Please

include the start and end dates (month and year) for each period of service. In the PT column, write in

the fraction of a full-time employee’s duties you were paid to carry out (e.g., if you were a full-time

member of the teaching staff, you would write in 1.0 and if you were half-time, you would write in 0.5).

If you are unsure of the correct fraction, estimate it and write “est.” beside your reply. Please write in

an answer under PT for each period of service.
