Purpose and Format for the observation study:
The purpose of the observation paper is to provide you with direct experience in watching a
person at work, play, in the context of his/her family, and evaluating the person’s general
strengths and weaknesses in terms of meeting the normal developmental milestones for his/her
age. The format presented below provides specific guidelines for the content of the paper. Do
not change the format:
1.
The paper should be minimum 8 to 10 pages in length, written in the first person, as a
descriptive account of the observations.
2.
The first section (1 page) should be titled "Family Background" and include a brief
description of the medical history of the person including any complications during
pregnancy, a social history including ordinal position, a description of how the family is
organized (intact nuclear family, single parent, blended or extended system) and a brief
description of how the reporting parent evaluates the person's general development. In
this section, you should also include a brief description of the physical characteristics of
the person along with a discussion of any unique psychological behaviors or
mannerisms which are manifested during the observation process.
The second section (1 page) should be titled "Summary of Interview Questions.” Here, I

would like you to summarize the results of the responses to the interview questions
during the observations. You do not need to record the person's responses to separate
questions, but instead organize the summary into general trends or themes which
emerge during the interview process.
There are questions related to the person's
perception of himself, his family, parents, siblings, peers, principal, teacher and school.

The third section (1 page) should be titled "Summary of Observations" and include a
description of the context, the activities that transpired and your reaction to what
occurred.

The fourth section (5 pages) should be titled "Analysis of the Observation
Process" and include an evaluation of the person's development from:
Pick two theorist:
Frued
Eriksonian perspective
Piagetean perspective
Vygotsky,
Bronfrenbrenner
Sternberg
Behaviorist.
In your analysis, provide examples of the person's behavior to support your
assumptions. If the theory is a stage theory, take the person through each stage.
Make sure each theory is used correctly.
6. The fifth section (1 page) should be titled "Summary and Recommendations" and
include a brief description of your assessment of the person's strengths and weaknesses
along with recommendations for remediation and/or enrichment.
7. If you do not hand in the observation, you will automatically fail the class.
