How Hot or Cold? Lab
Purpose: To model how distance from the Sun affects the amount of solar energy
a planet receives.
Materials: tape, graph paper, ruler, flashlight, Sharpie
Procedure:
1- Tape the graph paper to your table.
2- Hold the ruler perpendicular to the
center of the graph paper.
3- Using the ruler as a guide, hold the
flashlight 1.5 cm above the graph paper.
4- Use the Sharpie to trace around the
outside of the circle of light on the paper.
5- Next, move the light to 5 cm above the
graph paper.
6- Again, trace the outside of the circle of
light onto the graph paper.
Questions:
1- What happened to the circle of light when you moved the flashlight farther
away?
Background:
Light leaving a flashlight spreads out just like light from the sun.
Since the same amount of light left the flashlight both times, the smaller circle has
a more concentrated amount of light. Light is a form of energy. Thus, more
energy was received when the flashlight was closer to the paper.
