Minerals
Minerals are nonliving materials found in nature. There are more
than 2 000 different minerals on earth. Quartz, talc, halite (rock
salt), magnetite, feldspar and mica are a few common minerals.
All rocks are made from minerals. The soil contains tiny pieces of
minerals broken from rocks.
People use minerals in different ways. Hematite is used to make steel.
Quartz, one of the hardest minerals, is used in making sandpaper and
glass. Diamond is also very hard. Diamonds are used on the cutting
edges of some saws and drills. Talc, a soft mineral, is ground up to
make talcum powder. Some minerals are valuable for their beauty.
Diamonds, gold, and silver are polished and made into beautiful
jewellery.
