Photography Cheat Sheet
Take 15 minutes to play with your camera or mobile phone. Use this sheet to try 6 new techniques
and approaches to taking pictures of any subject.
Share your beautiful images - don’t forget to post your favorites on any social media using the hash
tag #yokadesigncultivatecreativity.
1. Think Color. Think Contrast.
Find an object to create an image that ‘pops’ right through your viewfinder
with color or light and dark contrast.
2. Think Micro. Think Macro.
Pictures of hillsides are amazing and beautiful,
but don’t forget to see the forest for the trees, or
as the case may be here, the leaves. You can
zoom in fairly close and still get a nice focus.
3. Use the Rule of Thirds. Or Don't.
A long-standing trick in photography is to claim 1/3 of
your view finder with your subject, whether that be the
top, middle, bottom, or corners. Fun to play with, but
don’t make it an absolute!
4. Even I Can Use a Filter
There are so many applications out there to adjust color, hue,
saturation, brightness, or just add cool filters. Instagram and even
Facebook have built in filters when you edit your post. Easy peasy play.
5. Use the Unexpected.
I’m out taking pictures of leaves and I come
across a fuzzy cute caterpillar. I’ll take it!
6. Overdo It.
Unless you are using a film camera, it is so easy to take 10 or more
pictures of a subject without feeling any remorse. So why not go crazy
and click until the cows come home? Change up your angle, distance,
filters, composition and then delete the ones you don’t like.
