Consonant Vowel Consonant Assessment
Purpose
The Consonant Vowel Consonant Assessment is a list of words to assist teachers in
determining a student’s ability to read and/or spell words with a CVC pattern.
Administration
-
The Consonant Vowel Consonant Words Student sheet lists a total of 20 CVC
words. Each row contains all five short vowel sounds. Teachers may decide
which row to use when administering the assessment.
-
The Consonant Vowel Consonant Words Teacher sheet allows a student’s
reading and spelling of CVC words to be assessed three times per year. The
teacher records the reading score in the first column. The student spells the
CVC words in the second column. Before giving the student the CVC Words
Teacher sheet, fold the paper so that only one section 1-5 is visible. This allows
the same sheet to be used throughout the year.
-
The Reading and Spelling assessments should be administered on different
days.
Reading
Give the student a copy of the CVC Words Student sheet.
-
Ask the student to read one row of words aloud from left to right. Words must
-
be blended, not simply sounded out, to be considered correct.
Record the student’s correct responses with a check mark in the appropriate
-
column on the CVC Words Teacher sheet.
Do not offer the student any assistance except to ask him/her to move on to
-
the next word as needed.
Spelling
Give the student a copy of the CVC Words Teacher sheet that is folded to
-
show a single 1-5 section. Several students can participate in this assessment
simultaneously if the teacher prefers.
Select a row of words to read aloud. Read one word at a time while the
-
student spells the word on the corresponding line of the CVC Words Teacher
sheet.
Do not offer the student any assistance except to ask him/her to move on to
-
the next word as needed.
Analysis
Note whether reading versus spelling CVC words was an area of strength for
-
the student. Consider carefully the errors the student made in each section to
determine possible areas for instruction and intervention in decoding and
encoding skills.
