b) observations are made from multiple positions to achieve a
variety of perspectives and are repeated to ensure accuracy;
c) objects or events are classified and arranged according to
characteristics or properties;
d) simple tools are used to enhance observations;
Objective: Through the study of the life science of plants students will learn
what a goal is, how to set group and personal goals, measurement of goal
progress, and identification of goal attainment and success.
Prerequisite Understandings/Knowledge/Skills: knowledge that living
things grow and have needs (SOLs: K.7b, K.7c, 1.4a)
Materials Needed: sprout seeds, potting soil, water, spoons for planting
seeds, small cups (Dixie cup size), chart paper and markers, white board
and dry erase markers or Smart board, attached discussion guide and goal
sheet, pencil, markers or crayons, apples
Time Frame: An initial 90-minute lesson with daily 5-minute reviews until
the goal is completed with a 10-minute assessment once the goal is
completed.
Lesson Procedure:
I.
Introduction: KWL chart in a group. Use either chart paper,
Smart Board or something where the information can be
referred back to at a later time.
A. Have students tell you what they already know about goals.
Ask leading questions. What can you tell me about goals?
What do you already know about goals? Can you give me an
example of a goal? Who makes goals?
B. What do they want to know about goals?
II.
Plant your goals and watch them grow!
A. Give every child an apple (or another fruit, vegetable or
flower they are likely to be familiar with).
B. As a group ask the questions that are on the discussion guide,
“Growing Apples, Growing Goals.” (Attachment A)
C. Have students answer on their own discussion guide. They
may use words, pictures or a combination of both.
III.
Planting seeds and goals
A. Give students a small cup, sprout seeds, and provide them
with potting soil, water and direct them as they plant fast
growing sprouts.
