IV. Materials:
 Energy Expenditure Chart for each student (included)
 calculators
 pinwheel
V. Procedure:
i. Activating:
1. Show students the pinwheel and ask:
 Is the pinwheel moving?
 What does it need to make it move? (wind, moving air, a fan, etc.)
 Provide moving air for the pinwheel and then allow it to stop again.
 Why did the pinwheel stop moving? (moving air stopped.)
2. Just like the pinwheel, many other thing are not able to move on their own.
What makes a car run? (gas)
What happens when a car runs out of gas? (It stops. It won't run.)
3. Have the students stand up and run in place for approximately 20-30 seconds. Then, have them sit back
down in the circle and ask:
What helped you run? (Energy)
What gives you energy? (Food)
ii. Acquiring:
1. What do we call the units of energy that we get from food? (calories)
Define the term, "calorie" (a unit of heat/energy found in food). Discuss how important it is to get the
majority of our calories from healthy foods so that our bodies have the nutrients they need to grow, play, and
learn. Talk about the concept of empty calories explaining that many foods can provide a lot of calories, but
do not offer the nutrients our bodies need to be healthy. For example, fast food is usually high in calories
from fat and does not contain essential nutrients such as fibre and protein.
2. Hand out the Energy Expenditure Chart to each student.
3. Tell the class they are going to make a plan of how to burn 1,000 calories in one day, using at least eight
different activities from the chart.
iii. Applying:
3. Students will need to figure out the activity, duration of activity, and the calories burned.
4. At the end of the worksheet they will add up all of their calories.
5. Inform students that if the total calories don't add up to exactly 1,000, they will need to go back and adjust
their activity or duration of activity.
6. Possible prompts:
What did you noticed about the calories burned in the various activities?
If a person burns more calories through increased activity, what might happen? (They'll need to eat more
calories, their weight may change, etc.)
7. Collect their worksheets for assessment.
