8. Take a toothpick and gently stir the combination of blood and anti-serum for 30 seconds. To avoid
contamination, always use a new toothpick to stir each new well. Avoid splattering and be careful to
not scrape the toothpick on the bottom of the typing tray.
9. Discard the used toothpicks.
10. You are looking for a change to occur in the well. Observe each of the three wells for signs of
clumping. This may appear as small crystals, as a thin film of dust within the blood or the mixture
may appear cloudy.
11. Record your observations in the table below. If you do not observe any of the above traits, write
down “normal” in the observations.
1. Question: What does the clumping represent?
12. Put a check mark () in the box next to your observations if clumping occurred.
13. Repeat procedures 3 through 10 for each of the remaining 3 blood samples.
14. When you are done, rinse and dry the clear-plastic well trays.

2. Using Punnett squares for the ABO blood group; show how Mr. Green could possibility be the father of
Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones, but never Ms. Brown.
List three examples of when blood type information is used.
3.
4. Describe the immune response that would occur if a person with type A blood was given type AB blood
during a transfusion. Use the terms: antigen, antibody, blood type A, blood type AB, transfusion, marker
or flag, clumping, shape, bind. Underline each term in your paragraph.
*Note — Copy your observations and conclusions onto the Student Answer Packet. Only the answer packet will be
collected and graded. You will need the Student Lab Packet for your records, and to study from for quizzes.
