The fee you pay for your pet license keeps your City's animal services programs
going. It is a significant source of revenue for Animal Control and allows us to
provide animal related services to the residents of Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Los Altos
Hills. Licensing your pet helps us to find new homes for
unclaimed or surrendered pets, keep neighborhoods safe from aggressive animals
and provides low cost spay and neuter.
Requirements
1. A completed Palo Alto Animal ServicesLicense Application.
2. Proof of a current rabies vaccination is required to obtain a license. This must
be a current valid Rabies Certificate, not merely a tag or a receipt. Palo Alto
Animal Services offers low-cost vaccinations most Wednesdays between Noon and
1 :00 PM. No appointment is needed however the Clinic may be closed due to
holidays or staff illness. We recommend that you call to confirm at 11 :00 AM on the
day you plan to come.
3. Proof of Spay or Neuter if applicable. To encourage spaying and neutering,
altered animals can be licensed at half the cost of intact animals. A Spay or Neuter
certificate or other official proof of altering is required the first time you apply for this
discount. Spaying and Neutering not only helps to reduce the burden of pet
overpopulation in the shelters but also makes pets less likely to stray from home,
less likely to get involved in fights and less likely to bite, all of which serve to reduce
taxpayers' costs for animal control services. To make an appointment or for more
