Egyptian teenager in Poulsbo seeking contact with family
Notes on my thoughts,
using diplomatic contacts they've made through their international
reactions and questions as I
read:
exchange program. But so far they are unsuccessful.
Mario said the main way he's seeing what's happening in his home
country is through videos leaked to YouTube by protestors.
In the particular video he shows KING 5, the images evoke echoes of
Tianamen Square as civil protestors calling for government reform in
Egypt clash with military peacekeepers.
Mario was born several years after those 1989 demonstrations, but from
his desk in a Poulsbo host home, he is watching the Egyptian protests
very closely.
"Makes me think what's happening to them," he said. "My dad works in
Cairo next to all this stuff, so, not a good thing."
Still, Mario said, if he was in Egypt, he'd likely be protesting too.
"I have been to all these places they are protesting in," he said, "because
they are very famous places."
Mario said there's not much he can do but keep trying to reach his family.
He still has five months left in his study abroad program, and hopes the
political situation dies down soon, lest he have any complications
returning home.
Meanwhile, he celebrates his 16th birthday in a week, half a world away
from a family caught in revolution.
